From Burnout to Balance: Enhancing Quality of Life Through Occupational Therapy

My Story

After completing a science degree and working at an assistance dog charity, I went on to train in Occupational Therapy. I worked as an Occupational Therapist in the NHS covering a wide range of acute hospital wards before specialising in Neurology and Stroke care.

After nearly a decade in the NHS I reached a point of burnout, struggling to juggle life with young children alongside work, managing a household and family relationships. I was overly reliant on support from family, which I was so fortunate to have, but still missed out on sports days, school plays and all the important things. When I wasn’t at work I lacked the energy and motivation to do more than what was absolutely necessary to get by. When my health started to get badly affected, I knew I had to make a change.

I left my job in the NHS and started working for myself, fitting my work around school hours and holidays. With encouragement from a Chiropodist family member, I had trained as a Foot Health Practitioner and started providing foot care in the community alongside independent Occupational Therapy work as an associate, providing assessments for equipment and rehabilitation in peoples own homes. I turned my Occupational Therapy skills on myself, getting back to the root of Occupational Therapy to redefine my own occupational balance and restore my spark for life. I have found Occupational Therapy to be a powerful, holistic therapy in supporting my own physical and mental health and has become a mindset and way of living more than a job.

I now combine all of my skills together with my passion for quality of life and health promotion to help people make lifestyle changes for a life full of vitality.
